Choosing dishwasher detergents
|
|
Why? Phosphorus
compounds leach from our septic systems into the groundwater and slowly
make their way to the nearest freshwater pond or estuary.
Freshwater ponds are particularly sensitive to the addition of
phosphorus. Algae quickly take up this nutrient and multiply
rapidly. This can cause abnormal amounts of algae and other plants
to take over in the pond. When these plants die, the resulting low
oxygen conditions cause fish kills, smells, and poor water quality.

All the dishwasher detergents on
store shelves in Massachusetts must be phosphorus free by July 1,
2010. Do your part now to look at everything you buy and choose products that will not add
more nutrients or poisons to our waterways.
